Hi, I am a Ph.D student working directly under Dr. James Cowen. I am the one who created this blog (of course with the help from my friend Emily). I am a trained middle-high school earth sciences teacher and I have one year teaching experience in high school before I decided to pursuit for Ph.D. I am originally from Taiwan and came to the U.S. with a master degree in Earth Sciences from National Taiwan Normal University, the best teacher training school in Taiwan. I have always been interested in Earth Sciences, especially in oceanography. I found that linking pioneer scientific research work with education is very important and would like to use this blog as a way to show you what we are doing and hope we can inspire you. My research focuses on the understanding of the crustal fluid chemical compositions, including inorganic, organic and dissolved gases. One important thing I do when I am at sea is that as soon as crustal fluids were samples, I do shipboard analysis to know the quality of our samples. That way, we will know right away if our sampling system works well. If not, we find the problems and fix the problems immediately.  
我是林卉婷,來自臺灣的留學生,也是這個部落格的創辦人。我從小就立志要當一個老師跟科學家,又因為我太愛遊山玩水了,所以選讀了師大地科系。在地科的五大專門科目中,選擇專攻海洋,因為我太愛水了,(台大的白書楨教授都笑我逢水必跳,他說的一點都沒錯)。當初申請學校的時候,想說既然都要離鄉背井出國去讀書,一定要選全美海洋研究所排名前十名的學校,然後能夠有漂亮海邊是最好的,因此選擇讀了夏威夷大學。也因緣際會可以跟到柯恩教授作研究,這個深海生物圈跟我以前學的完全不一樣,但也因而更吸引我,因為我很喜歡挑戰新的事物。
我在這個團隊裡面是負責分析水樣的化學組成,包含溶解在水中的無機與有機物,總有機碳,以及溶解態的氣體等。在2008年跟2009年,我們的採樣技術尚未成熟時,全依賴我在船上立即測得的主要化學組成,讓柯恩教授知道我們採到的樣品是否海水還是海下地下水(流動於海洋岩石裡的水),畢竟我們整個採樣裝置是暴露在海水中,如果有任何的接頭有漏,海水就會灌入採樣袋子中。當如果樣品是海水成分為主,我們就可以立即改進我們的採樣裝置,然後隔天繼續採水,而不需要等回到實驗室才分析,然後還要等到下一年才能再實際施放與採樣。
