Here I’d like to put down some very helpful advises he gave me throughout the past few years.
  •  If you do not know something well enough, say it. Do not pretend that you know about it. That will prevent you from learning more. We need to be very explicit.  
  • Scientists propose hypotheses to test. We are not trying to proof the hypothesis is correct. We really do not care if it is correct or not. Often time, we even try to disproving a hypothesis and that is a piece of important information to push science forward.
  • Do not limit yourself. Try and do what you think that can push science forward. What other scientists proposed to be a good way or a good explanation may not be the best yet. We want to do the best.  
以下是我摘錄幾個他曾經告訴我的觀點,我覺得很受用,在這邊跟大家分享一下,你就知道他是位多好的老師了。
  •  如果你對某件事物不甚瞭解,就要明說,不用裝懂。這就像是一個蓋上蓋子的空瓶子,無法裝任何水。因為我自負甚高,所以常常就很怕自己如果說不懂很丟臉,但也因此造成我自己學習上的損失,柯恩教授看到這一點,所以時刻提醒我,現在我終於懂了,虛心多了,也學到更多。畢竟走科學這條路,(日常生活也是)懵懵懂懂是不夠的,對於所有事物都要格物致知才行。
  • 科學家們通常會提出一些假設來進行驗證,科學的研究不是要去證明當初提出的假設要是正確的,因為如果你一心覺得你的假設要是對的時候,你就會只用那些佐證這個假設的數據,而忽略真正的事實(卉婷註:最終成為一個偽科學家)。我們要作的是想辦法去證明這個假設是錯的,當我們怎樣都無法證明這個假設是錯誤的時候,我們才能開始有一絲絲的信心認為這個假設可能是對的,然後我們又繼續找可以攻破這個假設的證據,如果一直無法攻破,我們的信心才能夠再提高。即使在過程中假設被證明是錯誤的,這也是一向非常重要的科學成就了。
  • 不要限制自己。只要覺得可以讓認知更前進的方法,都去嘗試。更不要被前人研究給限制住,他們提出來的方法或是解釋方式或許是不差的,但並不一定是最好的,我們要做到的是找到最好的方法與解釋方式。
