Cindy Shyne: Teacher at sea 2012

Aloha, My name is Cindy Shyne and I am a Teacher at Montessori Community School in Honolulu, Hawaii.  I teach in the 6-9 class, room 1, and I am also the P.E. teacher for the 6-9 program. My classroom is made up of 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students.  I have been teaching at Montessori Community School for ten years.  I enjoy the Montessori hands on method of teaching. We work with materials to learn math, science, reading, language, geometry, geography, biology and botany. I enjoy creating new "jobs" for my students to use to learn about different topics. I am excited to become the "student" on expedition TN-284 and learn how scientist "do science" in such a unique environment, on board a ship hundreds of miles from land!  My goal, in partnership with other teachers, is to develop a Montessori based curriculum about the deep sea from this experience. I have a Masters in Education with a concentration in Elementary Education from Chaminade University and an Elementary 1 Credential from the American Montessori Society.  When I am not teaching I enjoy surfing, swimming, learning to dance the hula and am a member of Encore Dance Project, a modern dance group.
